Surgical trauma results in the release of hormones that stimulate the body into a catabolic state, where its own storage of nutrients, fat, and muscle are broken down and used for energy and to support wound healing. If not addressed, these increased demands can result in a significant loss of muscle tissue, impaired wound healing, and an increased risk of complications like infection, inflammation, and swelling in patients.
It is therefore important to address these energy and nutrient demands to help the body heal and recover as quickly after surgery as possible. The Enhanced Recovery After Surgery program provides research-based nutrition and supplementation suggestions for such care.
About the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery Program
This program is designed to be used adjunctively with the recommendations of your medical doctor and/or surgeon regarding your procedure. A thorough intake detailing your medical history and procedure is taken, as well as the following:
- An estimated calculation of your body’s metabolic demands in response to your surgery, including the amount of protein, fat, and carbohydrates recommended.
- Pre-, during-, and post-operation management recommendations including vitamin, mineral, nutrient recommendations, and advanced wound care dressing to promote wound healing.
- Recipe samples of nutrient-dense meals and broths that are simple to prepare, ensuring that your nutritional requirements are met during your recovery.
- Counselling, education, as well as coping strategies to help mentally prepare you for your procedure.
Booking Your Appointment:
If you would like to book an appointment for the Enhanced Post Surgery Recovery program, it is recommended that you schedule your first appointment at least 1 month before your surgery date. Doing so ensures adequate preparation for your surgery; however, appointments can also be booked at a later time on a case-by-case basis.
